Mushroom Growing
Communities around Mgahinga National Park, Uganda
Mountain gorillas
Local Partner:   Department of Agriculture in Kisoro

The hilly terrain and poor soil quality around Mgahinga National Park can result in low crop quality which means that many local people rely on food collected in the gorillas’ forest to supplement their needs.

Mushrooms are a great form of protein and can be found in abundance inside the gorilla habitat, sadly their frequent collection causes great damage to the gorilla habitat.

To provide a solution this project trains local people to farm their own mushrooms. With the right training and equipment mushrooms grow fast and easily and are a great source of protein for local people. This project plays an important role in helping communities to become independent of the gorilla habitat.
